Music

#Sometimes

“When you’re happy you enjoy the music, but when you’re sad you understand the lyrics.” ~ Frank Ocean

The smoke from the fire permeates my nostrils,
People gathered around, somber mood, chatter in small groups,
Even my Indian friend Anil, braving the cold night,
All came by to offer comfort in the evening chill,
Teeth chattering and everyone sitting still,
Absorbing the warmth from the fireplace,
But one thing keeps the people going,
The sound of music in the local dialect,
Hymns playing in the background, amplifying the sad mood.

Saddened by the loss, this music escalates it all,
Making the reality of loss and the grief therein sink in,
I choose to go to another place, another world,
Block out the sad music, and still play my own sad music,
Maybe sad plus sad equals happy, math taught me (-) + (-) = (+).
Headphones plugged in, take me to a whole other world, of sadness.

One song tells me, the lone woman stands with ice on her lashes in the storm,
Another took me to the sea, telling me my love was inconsistent,
Like the sea waves rocking back and forth, and Gods love is the horizon, constant and steady,
The images in my mind become ever so vivid,
Im taken to a world away from the present,
Offering a temporary relief from the sadness,
Guess the sad music increased the sadness,
And made it spill over, leaving less sadness behind.

Sad music for sad times, and times of reflection,
Dont know if it reflects a sad life lived,
But I know that I feel much better with every passing melody,
One rapper asks why we wait for answers for what we have not prayed for,
It leaves me on my knees asking God why this had happened,
Sleep robs me, airlifts me to a place of no worries, sleeping during the storm,
But I have a re-assurance,
For He works in ways we cannot see, and fights many battles we know not,
And with that hope I master the art of smiling in the storm.

“Music, great music, distends the spirit, arouses profound emotions and almost naturally invites us to raise our minds and hearts to God in all situations of human existence, the joyful and the sad. Music can become prayer.” ~ Pope Benedict XVI

  6. I love the rhyme in this poem. These were some of my favorite lines, “Block out the sad music, and still play my own sad music, / Maybe sad plus sad equals happy, math taught me (-) + (-) = (+). /
Headphones plugged in, take me to a whole other world, of sadness.” The image of one sad world within another world marked me. I relate to this experience. Very heartfelt and moving message!
